I grew up in a small town in Mississippi, way out in the country. Our grocery store was a Piggly Wiggly, and our teachers felt like family. One I’ll never forget is Mrs. Autrey—my third grade teacher. She was kind, sweet, funny, and had long red hair. But more than anything, she made us feel cared for.
One day, she walked our entire class to her house just down the street—something that felt so normal in our small-town 80s childhood. When we arrived, her home smelled like strawberries. She served us strawberry cake and strawberry punch, and the scent has stayed with me ever since.
